Scientists do not know why Howe Cave in New York suddenly became infested with white nose syndrome in 2006. The invasive fungus infests hibernating bats and in the last 5 years has spread to 15 states and killed over 1 million bats. Scientists are racing to figure out where white nose syndrome came from, why it infests bats and how to get rid of it.
