Environmentalists report that invasive red ear turtles (
Trachemys scripta elegans) in Hoan Kiem Lake, Vietnam are threatening local native species. The public is being blamed for releasing the invasive turtles into the lake for good luck. The red ear turtles multiply very quickly, appear to be thriving and compete with the native species for food. A public awareness campaign has been launched informing the public of the threat of these invasives and has urged the public to kill them.
